She writes...

Playwriting

I'm a playwright, lyricist, poet, and author who writes toward healing, liberation, laughter, and the things we don't always give ourselves permission to say out loud. My work centers Black women, families, and communities—exploring what we inherit, what we carry, and what happens when we decide to choose something different.

I am a 2026 Goodman Theatre New Stages Resident and a 2024 Dramatists Guild Foundation National Fellow Alum. I am also a proud member of the Dramatists Guild.

Welcome to my world of words.

New Works

Girls On Sand, a new musical | Book & Lyrics by Lachrisa Grandberry & Molly Rhode, Music by Alissa Rhode.

Girls on Sand takes place on a July day spent with Grace and Zoey as they try to follow their one beach rule: No Negativity. Can the sun melt their troubles away? These life-long besties hysterically work to keep each other in check, 'cause life can be a son of a beach! Brought to you by the creators of Sunflowered and inspired by the Alley/Kaplan mega-hit Guys on Ice.

World Premiere July 11- August 2024 at Northern Sky Theater in Door County, WI. The live recording album is available on all streaming platforms.

Sunflowered, a new musical | Book by Aidaa Peerzada & Lachrisa Grandberry, Music by Alissa Rhode & Lachrisa Grandberry, Lyrics by Lachrisa Grandberry.

A tale of deep laughter, tough choices, and chosen family on a Door County camping trip.

When a young woman faces a life-changing decision, she calls upon her inner circle to gather for an outdoor camping trip. This six-woman ensemble piece bursts with humor and song, joyously exploring the beauty and love found in family and deep friendships. On dark days, sunflowers–and friends–turn toward one another.

World Premiere September 10- October 29, 2022 at Northern Sky Theater in Door County, WI. The live recording album is available on all streaming platforms.

Eeny Meeny Miny NO! a dramatic play by Lachrisa Grandberry.

In the late 1970s deep south, Willow and her cousin Christine observe the struggles of their matriarch, Madear, and Willow's mother, Bernice, who grapples with the weight of family secrets and societal pressures. As the girls uncover generational curses shared between mother and daughter, they begin to question the treatment of black women in society and within their own family. "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, NO!" explores these themes through a blend of realism and spoken word, reflecting the cultural complexities of the black experience and urging listeners to seek a better future. Inspired by the speech patterns and stories of Lula, Mississippi, this narrative delves into the often untold stories of black women's lives.

Produced workshop and public reading in the Milwaukee Black Theater Festival under Milwaukee Chamber Theater and selected as one the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series August 2021.

BLACK-EYED PEAS & COLLARD GREENS

A dramatic play by Lachrisa Grandberry

In a West Side Chicago apartment building, three families prepare to welcome the New Year with the beliefs, strategies, and secrets they've relied upon for generations. But what happens when our traditions no longer align with our reality? Black Eyed Peas & Collard Greens is a multi-generational ensemble dramedy about inheritanceand what happens when those inherited truths stop serving us. Funny, heartfelt, and deeply human, Lachrisa Grandberry's newest play explores how tradition comforts us, when it confines us, and what remains when we're finally brave enough to choose something new.

SHREDDING RUGS

Shredding Rugs is a bold, tender, and unapologetic poetry collection that speaks directly to the hearts of Black and Brown girls who have been left unprotected, overlooked, and underestimated. Through vivid storytelling and visceral imagery, Lachrisa Grandberry invites readers to sit with truths that are often swept under the rug.

This book offers more than poems, it offers presence. Shredding Rugs offer a space for reflection, release, and reclamation. With each page, Grandberry holds space for those navigating generational trauma, identity, and healing on their own terms. The collection doesn't promise neat conclusions or perfect endings, it simply tells the truth. Loud, clear, and rooted in love.

This book is for all the Black and Brown girls who were left unprotected, overlooked, and underestimated; offering them a space to feel seen, and valued. Through my words, I invite Black and Brown women to disrupt cycles of generational trauma, and be open to the possibility of something new.

The movement is growing. Click the links below to join the ongoing conversations sparked by Shredding Rugs.
